A few technical points worth understanding before you buy a thermostat at the big-box store and try to wire it yourself.
Most residential HVAC equipment in Central Texas runs on a 24-volt control circuit stepped down by a transformer rated 40VA for single-stage systems and 50–75VA for two-stage and variable-speed equipment. Smart thermostats with bright color displays and always-on Wi-Fi radios draw measurable continuous current — typically 100 to 250 milliamps — which is why a dedicated common wire matters. Power-stealing across the R and W terminals can work on a furnace but causes intermittent operation on heat pumps and high-efficiency condensing units.
Heat pump installs add another layer. AUX heat lockout should generally be set so electric strip heat doesn't engage above roughly 35–40°F outdoor temperature, since a properly sized heat pump in our climate maintains efficient heating well below that threshold. Compressor lockout is a separate setting and should match the manufacturer's specification — often 25–30°F for standard heat pumps. Get those two backwards and you'll either run strips when you don't need them or freeze the coil when you do.
Compatibility also matters. A communicating two-stage furnace paired with a Carrier, Trane, or Lennox proprietary control may not accept a third-party smart thermostat without losing staging functionality. Most popular Wi-Fi thermostats (ecobee, Nest, Honeywell T-series, Emerson Sensi) work fine with 24V conventional and standard heat pump systems but check the spec sheet before buying.
