A few technical details are worth understanding before you commit to any indoor air quality equipment in Central Texas.
MERV ratings matter, but airflow matters more. Most residential systems are designed around a maximum total external static pressure of 0.5 inches of water column. A standard one-inch MERV 8 filter at 0.10 in. w.c. clean can climb to 0.25+ when loaded — and a one-inch MERV 13 can push you over spec the day it's installed. That's why we typically install a 4- or 5-inch media cabinet: more surface area means lower pressure drop at higher filtration levels.
Humidity is half the comfort equation. ASHRAE recommends keeping indoor relative humidity between 30% and 60%, with 45–50% being the sweet spot for both comfort and mold prevention. In Central Texas, summer dew points routinely sit in the low 70s, which means your AC alone often can't dehumidify enough on milder days when the cooling load is low. A whole-home dehumidifier rated for 70–95 pints per day handles that gap.
UV-C systems should be sized to lamp output and coil exposure. A 16- to 24-watt UV-C lamp mounted within roughly 12 inches of the evaporator coil delivers enough germicidal energy to keep coil surfaces and the drain pan biologically clean year-round.
